Amongst many activities mentioned, education – that too for the down trodden children not going to any School – was taken up on priority. Initial survey around Sector 50 was carried and a school in village Hoshiarpur, Sector 51 was started with 20 children. It was run for three months -May to July 2008. Somehow the project was not getting the desired support mainly because of infamous “Nithari Episode” and was closed.
Later Mathura Devi Vidya Niketan was opened in village Barola, Sector 49 with about 20 children in rented premises of Rs. 5,000 p.m. Today the school is being run in a Rs.43,000 p.m. accommodation of 20 rooms with plus 170 children. Mothers’ of most children are household helps and father’s rickshaw pullers or guards. We are hiring teachers from village itself. At present Crèche, Nursery, LKG, UKG, Classes I to V are being run. In addition now, NIIT Foundation Computer Classes, English Speaking of Times of India, Sewing & Stitching Classes and coaching for NIOS (National Inistt of Open Schooling of Central Government are in progress. Two more school branches – in Rishikesh (75 children) & Vrindavan (25 children of Creche and about 42 children of B.Co. IInd and Final year) have been added.
We have finally succeeded in starting English Speaking Classes under British Council/Times of India “Teach India” programme. 25 youths (23 girls and two boys) are taking lessons and job melas for getting them employment opportunity being organised by TOI. We are in advance stage with NIIT Foundation to start their classes as well in Vrindavan also.
Very kindly Sai Mandir, Sector 40 is providing mid-day meals to all the children. It is our earnest desire that each child should be given an opportunity for all-round-development. School uniform, books, bags, shoes, etc. are being provided free of cost.
Roof mounted projector with 5 ft by 7ft screen, TV, DVD, Music system and number of remote controlled toys have been donated for use by children. Many adventurous sports like Burmah Bridge, Web Net, Tree Machan with approach through rope and rope ladder only, Wall Climbing set up, Shooting, Skating, Basket Ball, Badminton, etc. are installed. Normal toys like Swing, See-saw, jungle gym etc. are also there. We have made arrangements with nearby recognized bigger schools to admit our children after passing Class V. Apna Ghar is paying all school fee, uniforms, books etc. We feel proud that our students are able to get admission in Class VII to IX in these schools and are doing remarkably well in their respective classes. Two promising girls from very poor families have been adopted by Apna Ghar and all necessary arrangements for boarding and lodging are made.
Many musical instruments like, harmonium, tabla, guitar, bongo, Congo, naal, etc. are available and efforts are on to run regular classes. Three computers are available with internet facility and are arranging about four more computers. Efforts are on that tenth pass girls apart from our school students of this village are given computer training. Various craft classes are also being arranged. In fact, now for Deepawali children are busy making fency diyas, artificial flowers, newspaper envelopes and ganesha on coconuts. These will be sold in an Exhibition being arranged by a ladies group ‘Anchal’. This group mostly consisting of NRI ladies is providing lots of opportunities to children for teaching dance, craftsmanship, etc.
We feel proud that Government Undertaking like MMTC Limited has given Rs. 2 lakhs under their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programme and are providing computers. Similarly NTPC Limited also arranged a Drawing and Essay Competition in School. They gave our children an opportunity to prepare and give inaugural dance for their Annual Function. NTPC also donated a Water Cooler with a big Water Purifier R.O. System. Many more donors have come forward for social upliftment of the downtrodden society.
